TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD -
Several books of the New Testament narrate, and others refer to, an event in the life of our Lord where he took three of His Apostles: Peter, John and James to the top of a mountain and revealed His divinity there by appearing in a transfigured form, shining bright and white. Appearing on his both sides were the Prophets Moses (Giver of the Law, Torah) and Elijah (prophet par excellence), as if learning from Him. None of the biblical references (Mt 17:1–9, Mk 9:2-8, Lk9:28–36, 2 Peter 1:16–18), date the event. After the conversion of Armenia to Christianity in 301 AD, St Gregory designated the date of this biblical event to be on the 14th Sunday after Easter, which coincides with the pagan feast of Vardavar. The latter was observed as the feast of the goddess Astghik (Aphrodite) whom pagan Armenians worshipped and believed to spread love in the land by sprinkling rose water all over and on each other. Preserving the ancient festivities, St Gregory replaced the pagan theme of the festivity with that of the transfiguration of the Lord. The Feast is considered one of the Five Major annual feasts of the Armenian Church, because it reveals Christ’s divinity, and His oneness with God. Like the Baptism event, so in the Transfiguration, the voice of God is heard commanding “This is my son whom I love. Listen to Him” (Mk 9:7).

PRIMATE VISITS THE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY IN IRELAND
On Sunday, 30 June, the RtRevd Bp Vahan Hovhanessian, Primate, visited the Armenian Church community in Dublin, Ireland and met with the Mission Parish Council members of the Armenian Church in Ireland. At 2:00pm in the afternoon, His Grace celebrated Badarak and delivered the homily to a congregation which almost filled the beautiful sanctuary of the Taney Parish Church, in Dublin, Ireland. Badarak was followed by a lunch reception courtesy of the Mission Parish Council. This gave the Primate an opportunity to mingle with the faithful, the Sunday School students, teachers and parents and the youth. At the conclusion of lunch, the Primate delivered a talk on the spirituality, theology and writings of St. Gregory of Narek, highlighting key events in his biography. The final agenda on the Bishop’s visit was a deacons’ training session which he conducted in the church sanctuary. Three Armenian young men are interested in learning the deacons’ part of the beautiful liturgy of the Armenian Church and help in the celebration of Badarak in Dublin. Accompanying Bp Vahan during the visit, and assisting him during the Badarak and the Deacons’ Training session was Mr Richard Cherkerzian, an altar server of the St Yeghiche Armenian Church in London, UK.
